Southwest Mutual Insurance Company is one of the oldest continuously operating businesses centered in New Salem, ND. Incorporated in 1900 by twenty-six charter members, the original name of the company was Morton County Fire and Lightning Insurance Company. The original rates were $2.00 for membership and $.50 per $100.00 of insurance for a five year term. Minutes and policies for the first ten years were written in German, not English.

The name was changed to Morton and Oliver Counties Fire and Lightning Insurance Company in 1902 when farmers in Oliver County were accepted into the company. Operations were originally conducted out of the Secretary-Treasurer's home until 1979, when office space was rented in downtown New Salem.

In September 1983 the company moved to its new office building on 4th Street in New Salem, where it is to this day.

Morton and Oliver Counties Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance Company merged with Adams Farm Mutual Insurance Company of Hettinger, ND on January 1, 1997,  forming the current company and taking the name Southwest Mutual Insurance Company.

We currently serve over 1,400 members in nineteen North Dakota counties. Policies include farm-owner, mobile home, manufactured home, homeowner (manufactured homeowner), inland marine and personal, country home, farm and owners, landlord and tenant liability offerings.
